Every day at the Y we are inspired by the child learning to swim, the woman running her first mile, the baby taking his first steps, and the senior staying active and social…well into her 90’s. We are heartened by the purpose and potential we see in every member, volunteer, and person that walks through our doors.
We are also inspired by – and grateful – for you. Your support makes all of this is possible.
During this holiday season, we need your help to ensure we can continue transforming lives. Please give today, and together we can make our community a better place for all.
Your gift ensures that as community needs change and evolve, the Y is able to respond.

The Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA gymnastics team has been inspiring and helping children achieve their goals since the 1980’s. Through the years the Y has produced multiple State and Regional champions as well as State and Regional team championships. Our gymnasts learn, through fun and discipline, the ability to achieve their goals. We believe that if a child believes in themselves and trains hard, then anything, even the amazing sport of Gymnastics can be achieved.

The Stratford Y and the Lakewood-Trumbull Y are participating in the Project SEARCH Training Program along side The Kennedy Collective, Stratford Public Schools and the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services. Individuals will hold un-paid intern positions in membership, child care, wellness and facilities. While working side by side with Y staff members, interns will learn business processes, procedures and communication skills. They’ll also gain independence, self-confidence and self-esteem. Project SEARCH exposes individuals to a variety of careers and helps prepare them for future employment.
To be eligible to participate, individuals must be between 18-30 years of age, diagnosed with a Developmental Disability and eligible for State of Connecticut DDS programs or willing to pay privately.
Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life.
In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, Y staff and members. Y cancer exercise trainers work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. Trainers are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care. Classes will be offered weekdays with daytime and evening classes.
The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program includes:
• Two 75 minute classes per week
• Full access to the Y seven days a week
CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION
• Available for individuals currently undergoing cancer treatment or have completed their treatment.
